Village Allotments
At the meeting held with the applicants your Council explained that despite strenuous efforts to find suitable land none had been forthcoming. It was agreed that the subject be shelved for the time being. It will be aired agin at the Annual Parish Meeting next year.
Floral Chirton
Very few responses were received to the notice in the summer newsletter. In case anyone was thinking that your Council was going to dictate how the bulbs were to be planted this aspect was going to be one of the points to be discussed! The general idea was to enhance the general spring look of the village so please think again and let the clerk know if you would like to participate. Your Council is prepared to fund the cost of the bulbs. All we want is some interested parties to look after the planting.
Best Kept Village Competition
This year there was keen competition between only four villages, all of which were much larger than us. Sadly we could only manage fourth place. However the judges remarked that Chirton was "another very well kept and litter-free village blessed with a beautiful church surrounded by a very well tended churchyard". Inevitably there were some areas which the judges found to be not so good which led to us being placed fourth. We should not be dismayed by this and hope that we can look to improve on the weaker areas next year.
Traffic Speed in the Village
The Police have suggested that we might like to consider 30mph stickers on wheelie bins to remind drivers tha the speed limit is 30mph. Your Council is combining with other villages in the Pewsey Vale to see if we can acquire these stickers at a reasonable price. At present small quantities will cost over £1.50 each. The idea would be to display them on selected wheelie bins on the main thoroughfares each Friday.
Kissing Gates instead of Stiles
Those of you who walk the footpaths to the west will know that there are some stiles which are difficult for older people to negotiate. Thanks to a suggestion by Geoff Barfoot your Council decided that, with the help of Wiltshire Council, steps would be taken to replace selected stiles. Four in all will be replaced and should be in position by the time you read this newsletter. We hope you will find them easier to use!
