| CHIRTON & CONOCK FETE 2009 |
GOOD WEATHER, GREAT TURNOUT, GREAT FETE. That was David Baker's verdict on the Chirton and Conock annual fete on the School playing field on 6 June.
The fete raised a magnificent £1,900 for the Church fabric fund and this total is still rising, as income continues to come in.
The attractions — wellie-whanging, sponge-throwing (at a long-suffering Dave Mouncher — see picture left) and skittles, ably organised collectively by the Pottingers and the Bridewells. Then there was the famous bottle stall, run by Andrew Hitchcock, who may have been spotted the previous week on collection duties with a bottle-laden wheelbarrow, It was worth it, as this time it contributed around £400 of the total raised. Then there was the book stall (the Prince family), cakes (Helen Hues), bric-a-brac (the Dunns and Roland Tomkinson), and fabulous teas (Irene Tomkinson and a substantial team).
And of course Aldridge's were there doing a roadshow-style valuation of items brought in from far and wide — a lot of fascinating and curious things. If anyone was told they had a priceless old master tucked away in the attic, however, they haven't told us.
The turnout, around 250 according to David Baker, was largely due to increased advertising, Apart from a piece in Chirton Village Voice, the fete was featured on other websites, plus the Gazette and Herald and the Redhorn News. That didn't account for the weather, though, which while not brilliant, was warm and (mercifully) dry. David puts that down to divine intervention.

On 26th April Chris Brooks, landlord and chef of The Wiltshire Yeoman, completed the London Marathon in 4 hours 41 minutes. Read the full story here.

PARISH COUNCIL INCOME — PEGGED FOR THIRD YEAR
For the third year running Chirton and Conock Parish Council have decided not to increase their "precept" — the amount they receive from Council Tax payers to cover Parish Council spending. At the council meeting on 9 December all members agreed an increase was not justified and that the precept would stay at £1,500 for a further year.
So where does the money go? One of the biggest outgoings, at over £300, is regular cutting of the grass in Small Street and in front of the Village Hall. One of the smallest items was new one - some maintenance work on the Millennium Bench in Costers Wood. Last year there was also some excellent work done on renovating the village noticeboards.
The Council also makes a few small donations to charities from which the village benefits, such as the Citizens' Advice Bureau, Victim Support and Splash Wiltshire.

CALLING ALL DOG OWNERS! From the Parish Clerk: If you are not a dog owner, please forgive me. At least you will know that your Parish Council is trying to do something about the antisocial practice of not clearing up after a dog which has fouled a footpath or other public right of way! Despite the numerous notices and warnings urging owners to clear up after their dogs there are still far too many occasions when the mess has been left where someone might tread in it. This is not only antisocial but against the law. Recently there has been a case of a dog being allowed to foul right in front of the notice board in Conock. Also one person got half way to clearing up after their dog by collecting the mess in a plastic Supermarket bag only to deposit the bag behind a tree by the entrance into Costers Wood! Finally the lovely grass verge in The Street is not immune to dog fouling either. Kennet District Council supply small green bags, FREE, and I also have a small supply. Those dog owners who do clear up after their pets are being let down by those who do not and they DO NOT LIKE IT! This is a community thing and I would ask that everybody does their best to spread this message to those without access to the web. A notice will also be put on the notice boards.
